Baltic Sea; Fehnmarn; Wind Park
Fehmarn is an island at the border of Denmark on the Baltic Sea. It is 1/2 way between Hamburg, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark. There is a ferry every 30 minutes from Fehmarn to Denmark; the ride takes 45 minutes.
The drive to Fehmarn from Lubeck takes about one and a half hours. During the drive, we crossed the Baltic Sea.

Once on the island, we visited a farm and wind park. There are two wind parks on the island, both part of the "Repower" project of the local government. In this program, small windmills are being replaced with larger and more efficient ones. Windmills cannot be taller than 100 meters because of possible interference with bird migration. The new windmills generate, on average, 2500 kilowatts per hour. They each cost about 12 million Euros and it takes 12 years to make back the investment. The program is a public/private partnership, with local farmers involved.
